43, 1963 Journal 13 Aug After finishing the colony, Holland & D went over the data sheets so I could write some comprehensive notes about the setup. Very cold this morning (low 33°) warming to our 45° by late evening. The R4D returned with Maher & company, Hank Childs not back yet. 14 Aug Barrow, Alaska Colony work was at a minimum and Holland & D finished the morning half by 0930, No animals died. Helped Dave finish his blood sugars from 1960 along with some new ones. After lunch, Holland & D cleaned up the metabolic cages. Muscular weather, with constant drizzle and 25 knot wind from the east. Maher's group has established itself in airology. Weather cleared by 1800 and the wind stopped. I worked on colony notes until dinner time. 15 Aug Barrow, Alaska Holland had to clip samples today. Did the colony alone, which including the weighing, took the entire day. Wind blowing from the west fairly strong in the morning dying about 1100. Rex Piper left today. About a dozen of us went to the airport to see him off. Rained hard and soft constantly after 1300. Many animals on the powder diet are gaining weight. Our crude methods of evaluating food intake may be an aid as a pilot experiment. Traphinos I, II and IX, X have to come in tonight. Childs plans to run a little
