7 Aug. powder diet freeze type to start. The large experiment
will run 30 days ending Sept. 7. Keith Van Cleve
arrived today. Overcast day with almost constant
drizzle, Wind increase late at night but
always from west. Never was very cold. Wrote
notes after dinner and worked on the color
data sheets.
8 Aug. Barrow, Alaska
Hollander and I processed the regular data until
0930 when I left to pick up Hank at the live plot.
after return, we set up the metabolic cages to run
the last experiment with the special powder diet. After
lunch I helped Dave process blood sugars until dinner
time. Dick returned before lunch to tell Hank about
a seal on the tundra, 20 yards from Ukpiik Slough,
and a 1/4 mile from the ocean. They left to collect
the animal returned with it about 1430. Clean
sunny day with a light breeze from the west.
9 Aug. Barrow, Alaska
Vessel colony work was not done. The Schulty special
diet experiment involving 32 animals was set up
and the rest of the animals given food [illegible] (lab chow)
ad libitum. The powder will be given in a paste form
It will be weighed dry and then dried the next day, if
it is not dry already, and then weighed again. Cold wind
plus some occasional snow flurries are present. About
