28 July Barrow, Alaska
Showers continued today until mid-afternoon. Today
was weigh day in the colony. Holland & I worked until noon
on the individual animals & then finished the metabolic
animals and special powder animal until 1500. I
probably won't leave until Monday or Tuesday (29th or 30th)
because of the weather. It is also raining at Cape Thompson
vicinity. I would just as soon stay in that case.
I decided to measure tooth growth without using
a mark. Tooth growth is essentially unimpeded
because of non-abrasive material in the lake snow.
I worked on data sheets after dinner. If we can
feed the special powder diet satisfactorily, we will
try the large Schultz experiment with a smaller number
of animals.
30 July Barrow, Alaska
Looks like a good day for flying. Ted Humphrey said
there was a chance of leaving this afternoon. Steve Holland &
I worked in the colony until 1030. Went to early chew at
1130. At 1145 Ted said to get my stuff. We left at 1230.
Bob Murphey lifted me at the Pitkernge - Cape Savine campsite
about 1430, and went to pick up Childs at Cape Thompson.
I set up camp part-way until they returned about 1530.
Neither Childs nor I had seen any caribou between Barrow
and the Pitkernge. We used the wooden floor Hank had
built in his "earlier day" for our tent floor. We set out
2 lines of traps on 2 old trip lines which still were
