14 July
We were taken care of and the place was cleaned up. Mullen
came in as we were finishing and we talked about the
colony for awhile. Another bright sunny day with a
fair wind but not cold. Brewer told us y and Italian
correspondent from our State dept. who wanted to interview
the learning people. Hank & Dave talked to him about
the cycle centrum situation. Each of us added something
personal when asked why we were here and how we liked it.
A partial language barrier plus preconceived ideas made
explanations rather difficult at times. Walt Disney was
shot down several times. > Hope it was some value.
15 July Barrow, Alaska
a bright and clear day in the morning but becoming
very cold (due to the wind) in the afternoon. I worked
with Steve Holland in the colony until 8:30 on the
routine data. After coffee, Hank Childs, Steve Logston
& I went to the line plot to set the traps. We finished
about 12:15 and had to run for lunch. Some are difficult
to set because the recent diesel oil "dunking" gummed
the treadles. After lunch, Holland & I worked on the
metabolic cage experiment until 14:30. The 3 guys
returned to the line plot again to mark the traps on
a grid map. We returned about 17:00 after having to
walk part-way in because a bogey wheel broke (Childs
was driving). Holmes picked us up at AAC5 building.
After dinner, Logston was sent with Glenn Stanley
and Steve Holland (Volunteered!) to set lines XI & XII
