24. Journal 12 July Changed a few things around. Went over data sheets and wrote notes for the colony. Also selected some animals to be used in the breeding cages. I'm not sure whether breeding for more letters will bring any value now. Tomorrow I'm going to Skroinite with Dick if the weather is good. Lopton has been instructed to help Holland for a couple hours on the colony: Skinned a bird after dinner & wrote notes. 13 July Barrow, Alaska I went with Holmes at 0800 to Skroinite to census his plot. The colony was left in the able hands of Steve Holland. Steve Lopton helped him until 0930. Bright, sunny day but the wind is fairly cold. Not very much activity on the plot. A few (?) were located. Two lemmings were seen on the 80 acres. Snails (adults) are very numerous but only the midges were flying. Some bumblebees and a few flies noised by often. We returned about 1630. Hank Mills + D. Muller returned from Banks Island about 1800. Muller is doing all right but is indeed spot for studying animals if there are any more than those he has found already. Very desolate place. 14 July Barrow, Alaska After a start at about 0900, Holland and I worked until 1100 in the colony on routine work. We worked on a plan for feeding powder to lemming (Special diet!) in the metabolic cages. It was necessary to postpone work on the metabolic cages to wait for a 24 hour period, after lunch the metabolic cages
