Journal 12 june 1962 St. Barrow, Alaska Clear day, wind (fair breeze) temp, 38°F (1230) Lemming colony - all were alive this morning (0900) for the first time. The heater was not on and the temperature was in the forties. The lettuce given each one on the 11th plus the reduction in heat seems to have perked all of them up. I am not going to add lettuce today and watch results. About 1400, checked traplines I + II for scats of carcasses- Dave Mullers put out. We found three, nothing startling. Put kill traps on I + II starting a 3 day, 6 hr chick. John Hines has the 2200 and John Sullivan the 0400. Checked line traps on Beach ridge at pipeline for mark & recapture. One lemming caught, toes clipped and released [illegible]. Central marsh very slushy and most ditches between polygons are breaking down. 2200 - 34°F no wind. Checked line traps where gas line crosses Beach Ridge. No lemming caught. Very quiet. Very few bird songs. About 1700, persons brought in about 75 lemmings. I don't have enough tags to house each individual, i.e. I won't be able to maintain data until these are thinned out. The temperature in the animal colony is being maintained at about 54°F (2200). I suspect there will be several death in the morning from lack of water, etc.
