Journal 3 July Work and straightening out things for future experiments. Steve Holland left about 1000 for Dole Area to cut grass for a metabolic experiment. Steve Logston WALKED IN from Wohleslag Slough and checked line VII & VIII. He had flopped out the engine in the slough. Thusly, lines XIII & XIV were not checked until after lunch when Steve + I took another weasel look out there. Bob Semellen loaned us a steel cable to tow the weasel back in. First we checked lines XIII & XIV finding nothing in the traps. Took an hour to tow the weasel in. Upon returning I talked to Dave about some of the colony work. Wrote some notes until dinner time. Very warm day. Work almost nil. Remained warm until late evening when a drizzle started. Many insects rattled. After dinner I put up a Least Weasel. * 4 July * Barrow, Alaska Steve Holland + I worked in the colony until 1130. The metabolic experiment with Dupontia is well under way. Wrote notes after lunch. It had been overcast and drizzling all day with a slight wind from the east. The temp. stayed around 35° F or less all day. About 1500 we received a load of 14 live lemmings from the village. With the help of Logston's kids, I put them in the colony and started food & water. Six are juveniles. Our group went to the Mullen's for dinner, after which we were scheduled to go to the village. However about 1700, it started to snow lightly and continued until 0200 the following morning. Traps could not be checked.
