Journal
28 June Barrow, Alaska
Today is overcast with the cold wind still blowing
from the east. Some mist started in the evening
from a heavy fog which cut visibility to 500 yds. I
worked in the lemming colony until noon weighing the
animals, adding queso to the pregnant ones and mothers,
charging the ones in the metabolic cages. Steve Holland
suggested a practical change in the wire gauge of the
metabolic cages. By his method, the feces may be completely
eliminated from mixing with the urine. All metabolic
animals survived but are losing weight (small.) The
animal eating the Schultz diet without the binding
agent is doing fair. Difficult to tell whether any significant
changes are evident. After lunch > talked with Dave Mullen
about some problems in the colony, Hank Childs, Pitelka
and I set lines III A,B & IV A,B. A Red-backed vole
with 4 eggs was found and staked near 0.0 on III A.
A pectoral vole between III A,B but wasn't located.
A Golden Plover nest is on III B. IV A,B are as well
drained as they ever will be. Returned about 17:43.
Hank is not feeling well because of his leg... Mrs.
Won. Steve came today..

Checked traplines III A,B & IV A,B. Only one lemming
was taken. Clear day with wind from east but not
as cold as yesterday. Returned to help Steve Holland
with the rest of the colony work. Efficient methods
