Journal 21 June for a blood sample. This litter was destined to die so 3 were added to the other mother's litter since they were about the same age. Their average age is about 4-5 days. The foster mother accepted the new ones without incident. After lunch, Hank Child, Steve Logan and I went lemming hunting for the colony. Only me lemming was taken after 3½ hours. (2 egg Geck) 3 gaeg nests were found, 1 pectoral nest w/4 eggs, 1 Longpup nest w/ 3 young, 1 Snow- lemming nest w/ 7 eggs and other Pholcophora nests were apparent but not studied as to their contents. Two Brent's geese and a Stellar's Eider were taken. After dinner I set up data sheets on the new animals including fresh greass for the mothers. Notes were written after. Cold, windy, clear day w/ the fog starting to roll in from the north about 1700. Live traps were checked morning and evening with no catches recorded. Grass are drying and drying rapidly. 22 June Barrow, Alaska Routine work began on animal house. Dress was out for pregnant females or those with litters. Talked over experiment for use of metabolic cages w/ Dr. Schultzy Started 3 adults on new formula from Dr. Schultzy to test whether lemmings will eat it and what effects it will have on them.
