17 June Barrow, Alaska
Steve checked the 10 live traps while I watered
and fed the colony. I put in an order for more linsed
oil and then wrote a data sheet on the lemming
caught in the live traps. Mar Brewer informed me
at lunch that the colony won't take ready for another
week. Steve and I cleaned some mice in airology
and baited snap-traps. About 1500 we set lines
I + II on Gailine Ridge. We picked up the old winter
traps set by Mullen and found 4 cases of 4 lemming (other?)
activity in vicinity of snap-traps. One lemming was
still whole in a winter trap and had been snagged by
one foot. The larvae were already started. Returned
about 1700. At 1930 a meeting was held for the
objectives, personnel (distribution + utilization) and
miscellaneous plans of the summer. Meeting was
very informative and stimulating! I ran live traps
about 2230, finding 2 in traps which were weighed
and data sheets started.
18 June Barrow, Alaska,
at 0800, Steve and I took Pitelka to his census
plot on Beach Ridge and left him while we went to
check trap lines I + II. Six lemmings and one S. longipin
were taken. We returned about 0930. Worked on colony
until 1130. Returned to pick Pitelka at Beach Ridge.
After lunch, processing of lemmings began with
Steve and me aiding Pitelka. Became too complicated
