4. 1963 Journal 12 June a little after noon to meet Dick & Frank for lunch. After lunch Steve & I went to Voth's area to collect lemmings for the colony. Areas of cutting were spotty and only one Lemmus was taken by Steve in the area around Cakeater. We circled 'in the weed and walked around in the partially-covered (Snow) area. No lemming were taken nor seen. We returned to the area that had yielded six earlier that morning. One was taken next to the "Little Freeway" just before returning about 1600. I set up the 2 captured lemmings, added 2 Dicrostonyx and prepared a temporary colony sheet. After dinner I wrote notes & called it quits. The temp was 27°F before noon and reached 38° F by late afternoon. Overcast day with strong, icy winds and occasional mists. 13 June Barrow, Alaska Cold winds still blowing from north. Slightly overcast day. The first job this morning was to move any of our equipment from the new animal colony due to necessary painting. Returned to water & feed the colony. Two lemmings had died in the temporary lemming colony on the back porch of Airology, a little after 0930; Bill Jacobson, Steve and I went to
