Southlands Aquatic floating plant
florets for 1/2 or approx palmate sessile, orbicular, 1/7 median entire, lobate at base concave upward. The upper side densely covered with erect processes 2mm high sometimes a sample of 2-4 parted (mostly 4-parted) has beneath lying with hair-like rootlets or approaching glochides. See p.648 also B.M.C.P.173.
Certain bud-like bodies on what looks like 1/5-1/4 in clusters of roots may be sporocarpus buds of sporo-caps but no sporangia distinguished at 20x or 50x.

Southlands & FL. Vine of scarcely with sharp thorns. Leaves to 3 1/4 long x 2 in wide (three on branches) hastate the middle lobe 1 1/2 in long blunt but with sharp apiculates tips, stamens rounded obfuse, lateral lobes rounded base truncate, margins all beeft with sharp but not stiff spines esp. on lateral lobes. Young shoots bronze flecked with minute dots & green so that the glochides at roots burst to the eye. Petioles about 1/2 in thick sharply recurved at top of sheath where tendrils are borne, then curving inward again. Peduncles flattened or long or droop. 2 of heads 3/4 in across. Pod-sheaths 1/2 in long & 5/8 wide & flat base. Every seems only 1-celled with 2 ovules or perhaps sometimes only 1 ovule.) Stigma fleshy & curly.
5-9-29 Young shoots from roots have stellate pubescence (scattered) to about 2" from base. Stars spherical & many pointed see S.C.H.174.
