5-11-34 Quercus pubescens Willd Costatt 285,
SvIT 199
Quercus sessiliflora Salisb Costatt 237
B&N II #394, SVI 25.
A. Lvs first from branch on right side, just V-M towards
Admiral Rides Bench. Young shoot conspicuously
tomentose with fairly long hairs (hairs don't rub off
easily) vs last years wood (20x) already remains of
hairiness). Lvs (now) to 10 x 6.5 cm. Upper surface
dark green vs to eye glabrous, but on midrib and
occasionally elsewhere show short tufts of 2-seriate
short hairs. Under surface shows def fine
hairy to eye and (20x) is covered (on surface
remarkably along veins with tufts of several hairs,
the hairs certainly as long as the width of the
side nerves). The lvs are ob-oval or oblong in outline.
Often oblique at base, base squareish, or slightly
cuncate or even slightly emarginate but never
really eared. Often (not always) a nerve runs
to one of the lower sinuses (or part way to the sinus).
The nature of the pubescence points to Q. pubescens
but most of the petioles are 15-20 cm. (See B v.
B. Lvs first from tree left side, found shortly east of
Admiral Ride's Bench. Young shoot glabrous to
eye and (20x) has only few very short hairs. Last
years wood not hairy. Lvs (now) 7.8 x 4 cm.
