8-10-29 Betula lutea Michx. G334, BURI 610 Ft.
mostly fallen, just no. of F.& P. Cabin west of path
of St. John's. Conf with B. alba v. papyrifera (which
seems to have 8-9 pair prominent veins). Aside
from diff in shape of leaf, note that petiole seems
always pubescent with longish white hairs.
Many the wings nodulose from short annual growth.
Petioles shorter than in B. a-p-. Charlie calls
this "Witch Hazel," says "good for furniture".
8-10-29 Ribes oxycanthoides L. G451 = Grossularia
Mill. BURI 340 Unripe ft. F.& P. Cabin [at hand]-
ing path just in front of Cork shed.] Petioles with
soft short hairs on edge as well as long branched
hairs & sometimes a gland-tipped hairs and
sometimes what may be a gland or an insect
sting on the upper surface or in the lighter
colored groove. Lvs glabrous above, somewhat
pubescent esp. on veins beneath. Diff from
R. lacustre which its lvs somewhat resemble
by nodal spines, shredding bark & branched
hairs on petioles (but note R. lacustre has long
stiff hairs at base of petiole) & veins at base
of lvs less spreading.
