Staminad tube cup-like with 5 subulate stamens. Teeth alt. with 5 reeling labral petals. Bet. these leets the tube makes outward folds (After [illegible] and a little below these teeth on inside are 5 other leets straight, narrowly linear, their tips more or convergent over center of fl. 6-20-32 Lactuca virosa L. Knut 582, Bar 285; Bon 187, Bot H & II 295, Cote II x 32 Fl. Of fs. with labors. Gleumes def. purple-black, roughened by transverse wrinkles (these near summit sharp) but could not be called hairy at summit. Edges seem thin rather than thick (Cote). Basal lvs. sinuate den- tate (not at all divided?) St. lvs. strongly auriculate, clasping, sinuate-dentate, not divided (except the uppermost which are lobed toward tips.) Bracts virid green. Plant with no tinge of purple ex- cept what is inherent in the pronounced glaucousness of lvs. St rays by itself longer than internodes & growing progressively smaller until they merge into the strongly auriculate clasping bracts! Pars. some lvs tend to stand on edge (or this may be due to packing in box) but most only a few not definitely. Millersey
