Maria. St. almost glabrous (Bar says "pubescens")
young base?
and ligules without "pelos blancos" (Bar) & no
obscurely blotched white (Bon says not) but
cate nervures blanches
form 1 spike (heads side by side in spikes) makes
ident certain. Basal lvs 4 1/2 in (inc. petiole) x
1 1/4 in, dark dull green with obscure white blotches
or veins above, pubescent, serrate with
spiny teeth. (Teeth soft perhaps because lv.
young since dead lvbls are very prickly)
& much less branched, each branch elongated &
tearing many heads subtended by sinuate,
spiny, sessile, clasping, decurrent 4 5 1/2 cm
long, the upper half strongly arched downward.
Inside this flat base of flower 2-3 similar smaller
lvls (in bracts) with no gradations bet. them & the
appressed, hardly spine-tipped mid bracts. Scales
broadly winged & unfolding achenes. Receptacle
conical (See 12-18-30)
