2-17-31 Cate I 212 Fr. v. bud. Tram atop next to & Pension Bristol. Quite glabrous except for sometimes faint lines hairs on st. & occasional sparse pubescence on lower petioles. Evidently apetal. one. 2-17-31 Spargularia rubra Pers. Ku I 342 //; Bar 53 Bvh 78 Cate I 220 & 378 Fl. without brs. This may be one of the var. ? Ku. or species of Bar & Cate. Im- possible to determine at this stage. (549) RSK Ku II 405; Bar 379 2-17-31 [L. acanthus mollis] L. BM y CP 698, Cate III 60, Bar 258] No flnds. In valley east side of ridge bet Sierra Las Calatas, wet side of field about 1/3 way down. Rootstock (? rhizome) tumor 1/2 in thick, (juice collected 2 in long) erect but is- regular as the new but each year at side of old crown, marked entire length with scars of old petioles. At 6 points on root-stock emerge at 3/4 to 1/2 it thick, smooth white "runners" (almost 1/4 inidian) the longest piece is 4 1/2 in. The upper- most of these bears a few thicks but more fibrous rootlets. Lvs (a.f.s.) all from crown, thick or petioles as long as blades and not enlarged or clasping at base. Lvs oblong in outline, cut about 3/4 way to mid rib in m[iddle]
