Compositae. -1 v fr. Cult. Mediteraneo Hotel. Basal
lvs thick & leathery, reniform, the one measured
8½in long x 15 in wide, deeply cordate, the sinus
being bordered by edge & same character as petiole
(formed & confluent veins), the +-15 palmate
nerves conspicuous v light colored above, pro-
jecting beneath. & dark green, glabrous skining
above, dull & grayish beneath with remains of
flocculent pubescence. Petiole long v about (1½ inches)
faint
& about 3½ in thick with remains of flocculent
pubescence. No observations as to whether there
were st. lvs. Infl. branched, each branch sub.
extended by lanceolate bract (lower ones 1¾ in, the
upper ones much smaller). Already on peduncles 3/4-2 in long, naked or with 1-2 small linear
bracts similar to the 1-3 or 4 very small bracts
usually found at base & involucle. Involucle
14 mm high of a single series of linear, thick
bracts united at base, some with wide thin edges
on both or only one side which are overlapped by
a bract without thin edge (or but on only 1 side). Bracts
stiffly upright in fl but deflexed after fr. is
shed & no longer closely overlapping. Receptacle
naked, flat about 6 mm diam., jotted with rather fleshy
tooth-like projections between achenees. After fr. is shed
receptacle is hemispherical & arows remains
