Of flowering plants about 200,000 species are known. In the Gray Herbarium about 120,000 species are represented. The migration of plants northward after their destruction during the Glacial Period has not yet ceased. Fernald told me that he has been watching the northward migration along an estate in Maine and that in 40 years a number of plants (one being the gentian) have spread nearly 35 miles.
