Jalapa Sunday Oct. 3-1906 42 miles from Vera Cruz. Lots of tired and had lunch just at Carrizal. During the hours from 6 to 7.30 we had splendid views of Orizaba and other hills with green rock like Jalma. Cleland picked out a poney for me and after riding a few hundred feet it was evident that I could not make the animal go. Further there was indication of stubbornness and that the animal would act badly or demolish me to get to the first locality for Testing. I was asked by several Mexicans to try other horses but then was as stubborn as the horse at once, finally I got out and returned to the train. Riding horses is not my fort and does not try again. Then walked on--on along the track but saw nothing other than dense bushes along the track are small cuts of soft travertine deposits. A little north of Carrizal one sees evidence of a divided local plain. It looked something like this, track.
