At San Miguel there is a dense vegetation, orc the air is damp and a type of warm humid atmosphere of the subtropical area below. At 6 P.M. we are at Jalapa at an altitude 4608 feet. Behan died in the last two hours at least 3700 feet. The entire atmosphere is now different, at little excitation brings on perspiration allowing breathing in excess. We are at the toping of the hot region. After a half hour's walk around Jalapa we return to Mr Pullman and dress for the banquet at the Casino given in the honor of the heroine of Vera Cruz. One banquet began at 9 and we were not back to the cars until after 12. In many places on the preces [illegible] we see the Chacfar or streams of lava that have re- cently been found out. Also a volcano very small easily both placed in complete around our next destination.
