"It was greatly unexpected to find beneath Clinton fossils bearing beds and the reptilian Medinina fauna the same hygrozo beds seen by me some years ago at Hamilton and near Washington. These fossils which will certainly pronounce Clinton as it has one of the characteristic Clinton byzoros of this. Further it is from this zone that came the starpike sent me by Grant. Amongst those byzoros I saw a valve of [illegible] and the slope later will indicate the balance of the fauna. If these fossils conclude with the Ohio Clinton then clearly the true Medinina fauna is above and is of Delurian age.
August 16 Friday. Lockport.
Departure at 8.30 p.m. from Lockport arriving there at 9.00 Called on George T. MacCombe and he took me to the Whitmore quarry. There about 20 feet of Medina is shown. The basal layers are 5-foot gray and white sandstones with little cross bedding. Then follows about 10 feet of then bedded sandstones with some shales. These sandstones are decidedly cross bedded. This forms the top of these then bedded sandstone that Dick Law collected the Medinina fossils. Then come in mostly shales with some thin sandstones over the agyptium convolutions but the irregular ones some of which are oval ripple marked and others
