San Francisco, Friday Feb 18. A bright cool morning and at 9.05 A.M., I am off for San Francisco. Arrived at 10.15 and transferred to the Ferry Building where I checked my baggage so that I could see the city before going on Tuesday to Berkeley. In the Ferry Building is an immense relief model [something like 600 ft long] of California, painted my gold for the Coast Range. Tried to get a picture of it but none to be had. Then looked things in the State Mining Bureau devoted to mineral and economic gology but not to geology and not at all to paleon- tology. Then called at Margaret Shipley's office of the Barber League of America but he was there only on three afternoons. Did not see him. Then visited the Cast Museum, De Young Memorial Muse- ad the California Academy on in Fort de Soto Park. With the latter is the Steinhart Aquarium, [Exhibition] these Acadian Collections are very fine in geology [Mammals also and Birds]. Otherwise try attempt little. One long man to look in Ethnology.
