Pancreum Island appears like all or many of metamorphic formations. Around Victoria the land is very rugged, but as one steams north-along its eastern side one sees quite freely over flat hips. The river runs dry some. Had a far dark view of the higher parts of the Cascades. Too far away and too dark to make anything out of them. These cruises of Puget Sound during the delightful months of summer must be a joy to be ever remembered. Birds are plentiful and the water is clear of a dark place under the grey clouds of today. Part of the passengers looked like Cana- dians, a plain unassuming crowd. The man on my side comes and goes fastes. Put up at the Brower Hotel at the recommendation of Williams.
