July 16-97 Boston Friday Lieut Perry called on me in the morning and said the [illegible] had arrived during last night. He also said the [illegible] party had failed and that a Dr Stiebling very much desired to join our party. He would share all the woman and dangers of our party and would pay fifty dollars to each member while on Bourneak peninsula. After talking the matter over with Mr. White we concluded to allow him to join. Later we met his parents & they very much desired our taking him which we agreed to do. In the evening I drew up a paper in which he relinquished the Smithsonian Institution from all responsibility as to dangers. This paper is signed by Dr Stiebling and his father once the young man was an author. Purchased a skiff of Mr Richardson for $24.00. When we return the boat he will refund about two-thirds of its original value.
