"small swells in the water. Upon arriving on board
of the ship we noticed five boats coming around the
front and sure enough here are five Kiakars
after us. Lieut. Peary advised me to make some
thing to the Governor of Danish which I hastened
to my palize and sealed in an envelope a
danish translation of a letter I had written during
the day and a copy of which I deposited with
the provisions. The letter Peary handed to the
oldest Kiakar and we gave him a crown and
for all a large pair of ships biscuits.
I have never seen a finer lot of boatmen
than these Kiakars. No boats that responded more
quickly to the paddle. This midnight trek is one
of the most novel things in all of my experience.
The light of day is bright enough to read by, a
body of men quickly deposited from ashore, a large
ice berg breaking to pieces with a grand finale of
five Kiakars in a race to see who will reach
the boat first. I hope it are prizes that our
food will be found in good shape two or
three weeks hence.
Be return at 1.30 P.M.
Temp. at midnight 41° and light enough to read.
