July 24 Saturday, At Sea.
Purchased a small ship in the morning and by 11.30 A.M. the Ship steamed out of Kelly Cove for the Labrador coast. The sun was out bright and the breeze fair but beat on to the vessel. By 6.30 P.M. we were opposite Cape North. This land mass is grand in its majesty, the highest in this region being probably not less than 2200 feet. At this time it is partially covered by the fog and only here and there can we see the full height.
As we proceed the fog comes down upon us and the grand stiffens. The Ship due to the great amount of coal in her pitches and plunges gently, and ships seas run to deck.
I am feeling very uneasy and will retire by 8 o'clock. Others at the same.
In the sea about Kelly Cove we see many Aurellia or medusae and colored sea-creels. Temperature 72° F.
White tells he had scurvy in his trunk and back it was a cruel and bad night. Or much scurvy my son of forecattle that d'oles had to be forced to let the mate through.
