28 Haining Monday, Sept. 17. Observations in lab. 29 Croyl blue brilliant 30+4 aliquots from pipette of standard solution Stenotome ( ) & Electra pilosa on laminarian were O.K. after 2 1/2 hrs. This was too long or too concentrated for Bugula + Electra. Typical local birefringence of Junulus in wall of Electra stood out. This same structure seems to longitudinal merging up tentacle sheath (or is it membrane of tentacle sheath In Electra pilosa the proximal spine (subaculea) stains blue whereas other short spines do not stain blue. In E.g. 4 in stenotome stomach has 3-4 large clear spherical structures wh. extend across diameter of digestive tract. Tentacular sheath clearly stained even though tentacles retracted to lower 1/3 of zoecium Neutral Red. Material in 3-3 1/2 hrs wh. was far too long. Similar results to Croyl blue in amount of stain taken up by various species & genera. Bugula with seemingly "spines" around frontal wall. ?? - 2 or 3-fingered arrangement.
