Portland, Oreg., March 5, Saturday.
Intended to take Rutherford can to see the mouth of the Columbia River, but it began to rain before he can started. Then walked to City Library and read a little in Cordons "Fort Island". Packed up at noon, and was transferred to the depot and I P.M. am off for Seattle.
Portland is not beside the great Columbia River, but the Willamette River. It is about ten miles out to latter to the Columbia river. We first go down the Willamette about 20 miles and then through a big tunnel over low lands and then across the mighty Columbia, a river as large as the Ohio when in flood. Just now it is about as clear as the Ohio a Min. rivers. We then go north along the east side of the Columbia River and finally leave it, going through four trestles. Finally we are on Puyallup Sound and at near 6 P.M. get to Tacoma. Then am in the drawl to Seattle.
Staying at the Grand Hotel.
