Melanerpes fornicivorus
Road 3
(4 Feb) the acorns were coming from the ground. Several were brought in
with caps, and ♂184 brought in one with foliage attached.
Another ♂ helper is missing here. ♂656 not seen at
all, and with all this activity, I should have seen him.
Wow, last half hour, an incredible frenzy. I couldn't keep
up with all the storing. This time birds were harvesting
the acorns from trees either on PO hill or on the flat
just N E of the granary.
Birds were also storing a few acorns in the broken VU 20 M
north of the main area.
1050, ± find the tree from which birds were gathering acorns
earlier. On PO hill side of road, right next to road (and 2 small
sycamores) 50 M down from granary area. Acorns visible in
the tree, as well as a few on the ground.
Anyway, ♂184, ♀265, ♂668, ♂537, ♂654, ♂7655, ♀710
all seen well + repeatedly. ♂656 missing. ♂708 + 709 definitely
gone.
18 Feb Granary census, 1115 - 13/5. Just a couple of acorns stored,
but a lot of action none the less. Birds moving across all around.
Complete census, as on 9 Feb, but ♂656 is still here
Birds are still interested in their new roost hole.
19 Feb Good watch. Almost complete census during another-
granary census, 1415-1615. All but ♀710 here.
A lot of action in the granary once again. Only 3 acorns
stored, so they are definitely winding down as far as
storing goes.
