6-5-38 Zanthoxylum americanum L. G 537; BUBT 444 young fr. Roadside southward. Stout thorns on old wood. Fls glandular-pitted. No glands visible in lvs.
6-5-38 Cornus circinata L'Her G 624 = C. rugosa Lam. BUBT 661 No flrs (hence?) but otherwise R.B.T. feels sure ident. Common east & drive elsewhere. Sts green, dashed with purple v, on older parts, rough-warty. Lvs broader in proportion than in C. florida and rounded at base. More hairy than C.L. Cross veins nearer together gives lf. rugose effect. Lateral veins about 6 pairs. Very young lvs reddish. See Keeler 246 Hairs on lvs beneath white appressed; above appressed arranged as in C. paniculata [6-17-38 F-L]
6-5-38 Cornus florida L'Her G 624 = Cyrnoxylon floridum, Ref. BUBT 664. Lvs from tree seen in fl. in May. Last yr's twigs more or less reddish but new growth bright green (not streaked with purple as on C. circinata) Bracts at base of new growth (bud scales) red & persisting (at least sometimes) after new growth is well started lvs expanded. Hairs on lvs above white appressed arranged as in C. paniculata; beneath the same but also spreading, longer hairs on veins.
