7-17-38 Sassafras variifolium Ktze G 414 = S. Sassafras Kret BVB II/134 No fls fr. Woods south of house towards So boundary. Patch of several stems of young growth, 1-3 ft high. 7-17-38 Rhus typhina L G 552; # = R. lucia Sudw BVB II 481 No fls fr. Woods south of house, north edge of drive. '7-17-38 Woodsia obtusa Torr G 44, BVB I/14, Clute 96 Sp. in "Lookout Rock" on rocks below slightly southward on Burton Peice land. Fronds 9 in overall (of which stipe is 2in (see Clute who seems to say stipe of "fin blade" would be 2in). Stipes a fanblade tan, slender but very stiff, & fluffy with small scattered scales. Upper part of rachis v fronds beneath minutely glandular puberulent (20x). Small sporangia very near the edge. Indusium split into lobes dense but not making the deltate shaped feet RBT had expected in a Woodsia. Spec very like illb(Clute) sp of the drawing of frond. The fronds from Lookout Rock had edges considerably curled under hiding sporangia when collected. Cfd with Cyanopteris bolbusa of 7-10-38. See Clute &ndif from C. fragilis which has relatively longer stipe sharper.
