In the afternoon we were directly east of the Island of Guadaloupe^ which has bold sloping sides, + a truncated top or summit of green wealth like a tableland. At noon we were in sight of the island of Martinique which had a sharper & higher cone than Guadaloupe. No sea birds were seen although we were in sight of islands nearly day. 10 dropped anchor in clover bay at 9 P.M., weather for day smooth
