1978 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Road 3 Hastings Reservation (1 May) 1645. Returned and opened the hole again (which woone was in) and once again found nothing inside. What's holding everyone up? 3 May 1325. Nobody in any holes. 5 May 1045. 8 184 at Finch; see Finch notes. 1105. 8 in hole. Now may be? 1500. Success: 3 fresh eggs, marked and returned. It's about time. (Flushed a bird from the hole again). 6 May 1540. Bird flushed from the hole again, where there are now 4 warm eggs. 7 May 1500. Still 4 eggs. Looks like it. 9 May 1000. $269 seen wandering up at Black Oak! 14 May 1700. Checked the nest to confirm the full clutch, which is indeed 4 eggs. 19 May 1545. Counted stores: Valley Oak: 82 Sycamore: 49 Also went up to check the babies, all 4 of whom hatched, but one of whom is bury starving. The other 3 look ok. 26 May 955. 3r-B/r#382 seen intracting briefly at lower Arnold 2! 27 May 1530. None in hole. Watching briefly 1534. Bird went to hole-flushed when seeing me. I'm satisfied. 2 June 1145. Bird in hole. 5 June Watched the nest from 1420-1730 (190 minutes). All birds except 8384 were seen feeding at least once. See back for compilation. 6 June Watched the nest here from 1500-1800 (with a ½ hour intermission). All 7 birds were seen feeding this time again all exclusively insects. Compilation is on the back.
