On Bours Bernadin de St. Pierre April 7, 1929 Lat 12°43'N Long 43°19'E noon Eastons run 307 miles sino noon yesterday 19 mile to Djibouti Passed through 12-13 hours Perim between 12+13 hours the mainland of both sides mountainous and there are numerous small rock islets along the coast especially on the African side. They seem to be composed of sand stone. The wind was to the Eastward of South and fairly strong. Had quite an argument on Wild Life conservation but that got some-what heated.

18:00 hr. On arriving at Djibouti the boat anchored of Woodnut by a crowd of boats & boys Bliming for coins, here the boys used use no boat but swim + holla after Dines we went ashore to mail some letters we first went to P.O. which was closed so we went to a restaurant where we bought some stamps it was very hot at least very humid Temp: 86-87 we had lunch at restaurant which made us all the hotter, Abreption froms even when we were Coming back we took a matati now boat we were 6 in to

On Board Bernadine left St. Pierro April, 8, 1929 Lat 12° 22' N Long. 44° 12' E Distance from Djibouti 80 miles 53 to Aden Left Djibouti at 6 hrs Arrived in Aden between 16-17 hrs. We took on Tadji for the 2d tanks or reservoirs for catching its rain water. They are near in a large crater (extent) near a large town they were very interesting but they are all dry, don't had not rained for over a year the natives couldn't agree on how long since it last, but we must have been welcome guests as it clouded up soon as we arrived and from the looked it rained on the highest peaks.

The mountains and country are of volcanic origin and there was no vegetation in evidence. We come back from the tanks in a road about way and the scenery was mericulous. It was the sun was setting and the mountains were all fire. The mountains say, Daylight are very pretty and interesting. Sharpland rugged with lot of jam- dorms & aquilles. Although it was just the right time when we arrived, it probably could be pretty hot. After Dinner I watched them bowling. Mail, it was very interesting, there was lots of shouting and [illegible]

the natives (who were doing the loodis) sing and dance The hygands were less polite so to them on this in any port so far. It is now 12.00 and we are about to leave for Mombasse. We got aground. So we did not get away till nearly midnight.

on Board Bernadine de St Pirr April 10, 1928 Noon Lat 10°46'N Long 51°24 E distance run since in vor yester by 297 m. to run to Mombasa 1171 mile Wx. There was deck sports in the afternoon They were quite a races they were pedd French against the English. The English went into turn manning business and coming in with proper shoes. The French did not seem to care to put on much bother so they lost everything There was 2 tug of wars team take on between the 2 long English teams won.

Closest fought. the French tried equally hard but they did not have proper shoes or any recognized leader.

Bernadini left Pier Chris 12 1929 at 219°N 019' Geng 770 E Distance seen 32.0 miles since midnight Friday 55 minutes to Morniass In the afternoon we had the ceremony of crossing the equator. Ended with each one on the boat, almost being thrown in regardless of the number of times they had crossed. Every one engaged himself immediately. The most surprising thing was how well every one kept within the bounds of reason

On the evening we there was a "Grand trivage" for the benefit of the Beaumont fund. Every one bought ticket and any one who wanted to give some object to be used as prizes. If one got a prize, the edict was to give it back; afterwards the things that were given back were objects auctioned off. We got 50 francs for an empty box of matches.

On Board Bernardin de St. Pierre at Mombasa April 18th, 1929 Arrived about 10:00 this from 10. Westshore and after lunch and took a drive around for a hr. The Country was interesting and pretty banana & coconut palms were in evidence especially the latter. We visited the public market and I was very much surprised as to how clean it was very few flies. We had somewhat of a row with the taxi driver who tried to collect double fare. We left Mombasa at about 5:17:30

On Board Bernades de St. Pierre April 18, 1929 arrived off Maroni; Grand Comore 6:45 this morning but was unable to enter till around 8:00. When we finally got in we were mild by a crowd of native boats which consisted of outrigger canoes, sail boats and one or two European row-boats. The canoes were made out of a hollowed out log. The crowd was the most unruly that I have ever seen. They were pushing & shoving also throwing on another oar board. eventually they ceded in discharge and taking on what they we. We got away about 14:30

Monjaketonics May 12, 1929 Was awakened at 6:00 by bugle when to sleep again but was awakened again by a repetition of the bugle. got a load of luggage & came out here about 9:00 unshaded and took a short walk which melted 4 birds. After lunch & set six mouse traps in the grass. Took a walk around the path through the forest which melted about a dozen birds. This woods forest is very pretty with trees [illegible] ferns & and a fault- ful stream not many mammal signs.

Monijaratombo May, 13, 1929 mark 73 min. 46. This morning got 1 mammal, which I was unable to identify. It was trapped in the grass country under a brush. It was later by some other mammal consignants it made a big skin that for it was about 25 ft. above the floor of 50 gally. the number is 1. Mammal No. 2 Mus musculus was brought in, it skull was so damaged as to be not worth keeping. returning from setting Chaps I collected a male of a snake (Chavty a conductor Injection eagle?
