Monday March 18 To Els We left Jackson on the stage and went up to Kelly. Saw small hands fell on the hills east of the valley and a long stream. In the afternoon Mr. Johnston came to investigate the country about Kelly, where I went on up to near Elk. Saw no elk along the stage road between Kelly and Elk, and learned that none had been present all winter, or that practically none had passed down through them in the fall.
