Wednesday August 4 Left for the Skull Spring road early. Saw a brush rabbit about 5 miles south of Riverside at about 40 feet and shot another soon after we started. Saw Callospermophilus about 6 miles south of Riverside and a second just beyond. Had dinner at a grocer's. After reaching Criston, took tea and tried to catch Thommas. The very abundant but was not working in the middle of the day. Criston is in a dry farming valley, when the rancher at one wall at Shimeyway. Drove back to Skull Spring P.O. to try to get a horse in place of the mare which is about to foal. Saw a brush rabbit near Skull Spring P.O. where we camped late Thursday August 5. To DeaKeeny Co. My Campman had to get a horse to take the places of his mare which is about to foal. It was after before we got away. We drove out over a high ridge where there was one dry farm ranch and down a steep pitch to a small creek where we camped 16 miles from Skull Spring. Saw little of particular interest.
