July 5. Cross Creek Lake
Spent the forenoon in this
fjord. Drove to a busy camp
on the head of the valley
in which many deer were resting, a
great many caribou and some white geese.
A fine stream dropped down
into the head of the canyon
having plainly made it.
Saw one of the camp women
and many other birds in the
canyon. A herd of elk
has been ranged on a meadow
in the face of the slope.
They told me that formerly a
pair of eagles usually had a
nest in the canyon
Tuesday July 6. To Lava Beds
Broke and I went one to the
Lava beds at the foot of the lake
and spent the time there
exploring them. There were a
great many small calves, and
in them were resting many ducks
geese, terns etc.
The lake is evidently found
by the flow of lava during
the canyon in which the stream
formerly ran. This is north
of Lava Lake below the big
one but this year it is dry.
The big lake not filling its
canks.
