Tuesday Sept 23 Jackson & I went up the valley beyond when we [illegible] while Mr. Cross & Petrie with the other [illegible]. We found the two side valleys to be impractical for game and retired in evening. Through we [illegible] to Camp [illegible] Marmota still active at [illegible] For Cross & Petrie fired about 3 shots about noon but we could not see where the one In the uppermost of the valleys we explored was a Lake 2503 miles long very deep and clear. It rolled a rapid creek about [illegible] wide comes out at the base of the terminal moraine which dams the lake about 157 yards below the lake. Both a photo [illegible] the Lake! Some tracks & another graph Wednesday, Sept 24 Mr. Cross did not when went out in Johnson with Jordan & Traps. Retired at noon but [illegible] wait on some east side of lake. I put in the afternoons on [illegible]. Both Eber & Muelta recognizable. Dixon retired in evening with a bear. He saw a silver fox but missed it. Shot another bear but lost it. The Indian say that the grizzlies in the valleys always go m. earlier than those high up. Because they come out earlier and get fat early in the fall, while those which live on the highs have to wait until late to get fat.
