Friday Left 7. In camp Rain heavily latter part of the day and practically all day. Rainstorm on the hills near, a good deal of which went off in the day did not reach because of rain [illegible] Monday Left 8. 12 miles along trail We left rather late in the rain and continued along the trail Crossed a couple of tributaries of the Susitna in the woods and then after about 4 miles came out into a series of alpine meadows which except for the continual rain proved to be comparatively dry. Cross & Dorton shot some mammoths Lemmings very common ascended a tributary and crossed an open basin around the Mt. to the Sustitna, carrying a long barrel at a. after about 4 miles and arrived and camped about 10 miles. Tuesday Sept. 9. Eastward toward Susitna We left rather late in the rain and soon left the Susitna trail on our left and crossing a tributary of the stream crossed yesterday, we continued down the valley of the combined river, in an easterly direction and on the N side of the valley. For some distance it rained and snowed all day. We crossed a broad swamp and continued along the edge of a steep meadow on the south side of which rose a high abrupt Mt. The meadow continued for some distance across the left side while the chain was long descended into a narrow valley on the eastern side. Cam her last day 1 August and pulled out on the first of September. Killed on small part. 26 grouse & 3 ptarmigan in the mountain. Largely, 40 each one Good hog for you
