Saturday Aug 27 Got away in good time and kept off an. Same side of the river until nearly sunset when we crossed to right bank. Twice one of the men killed a bear in the afternoon they are numerous and as now feeding on the various berries I saw many bushes I found broken berries, which are not ripe as are the more ripe Cornus Cornus — still have some flowers in shady locations though most of the berries are. ripe Had a slight frost last night Sunday Aug 28. Remained in camp all day. Crossing a large area on the hillside near camp is a clearing of chestnut choked meadow which must comprise many thousands. I set a number of traps for them. Collected a Cornus canadensis berries. ripe Cornus — still have some flowers in shady locations though most of the berries are. ripe Had a slight frost last night
