Took some Mecistus in my traps and set out more also took a few birds. Last night the small birds were skimmed with ice for the first time. Today small birds are much less common than yesterday and probably many left in the night. The day was mostly fair with less wind than usual and the evening gives promise of a good day tomorrow Monkey Sept 7 Took Mecistus, and a few birds and made them up and pulled the rest of my specimens dried very dry. It was a fine day with little wind late In the afternoon Mac, and Gray arrived bringing the back of the dried meat, and the skin of this moose. Shortly before sunset a flock of snowgeese flew along the shore from the east. They intended to alight in our bay but were frightened away by our camp and went back along the shore. I went up there with my gun and killed four at one shot. Will skin one, and took meas- urements of the others. If the weather is favorable we will start along the cost early in the morning Small birds have been scarcer the last two days than before. Ice formed on the pond last night.
