Laysan Albatross Diomedea The albatross were in approximately the same age group as those of Lagoan, I.e., down covering the feathers over the heads, lower breast & napes on most individuals. Individuals were scattered over the entire retreat with some clumping in cleared areas and along the beach. Parents were noted coming in the daytime to feed the chicks. An actual count of 2785 locals plus 178 adullons was made during the afternoon of 18 June. Estimated 5000 locals + unknown # of adults as only 4 people made the count and much of the interior was missed. Wedge-tailed were not nearly as abundant here as on Lagoan. Here they are confining to small areas generally within the southeast edge along the beach. Individually as scattered throughout the island, but in very low numbers. Although the entire central portion of the island is dug up into mounds, apparently this is the work of Laman Island Petrols as Wedgetails are not in these areas. A few eggs were noted, but most birds are just now digging burrows or setting in empty shellburrows under thrifts of grass or other vegetation. On 19 June a number ca.(6) were noted sitting in shallows on eggs in the very open grass lawn with no protection from vegetation at all. Also 2 eggs were being incubated under the clustering trees on the shore - they were also without any ground cover. All eggs noted were very fresh. Shelton estimates 50,000 which I believe is a good guestimate.
