CATALOGUE OF EGGS COLLECTION OF F. H. FOWLER (cont'd) Number Name Date Collector Locality Ident. Incub. 344. 7-8. 475. Pica p. nudsonica. Apr. 14, 1898. F.H. Fowler. Ft.Logan, Arap. Co., Col. Both birds present. Fresh. When this nest was first found on the 9th, early in the morning, it contained 2 eggs; on the 14th 8 eggs; making probably one egg a day for 8 days. The nest is large and bulky, but well built. The entrance is very large -- fully 1/4 the circumference of the nest. Nest cup shallow, and lined with rootlets. Nest in a leaning willow, 7 feet from the ground, 12 from base of tree; 50 feet from a much-used road, and in plain sight. While packing the eggs the male kept hopping around the female, shaking his half-open wings, and uttering a squeaky scolding noise in low tones. 345. 5-3. 373e. Megascops a. maxwelliiæ. Apr. 1898. F.H. Fowler. Ft.Logan, Arap. Co., Col. Both parents were pulled out of the hole and flew in opposite directions, but neither went to hole No. 2, as they always have before. The three eggs were in different stages of incubation, the whites being from liquid to the jelly- like stage. The hole was about 30" deep, and 7" in diam. In the bottom were a few feathers and some chips of rotten wood. 346. 7-4. Passer domesticus. Apr. 28, 1898. F.H. Fowler. Ft.Logan, Arap. Co., Col. On the morning of the 27th, I found 6 sparrows around the long coal bins going to roost behind the iron rollers on the tops of the sliding doors, and soon discovered some tell-tale straws protruding from the openings of some cleft-swallow nests under the eaves of the granary. On the evening of the 28th, I investigated these nests with the aid of ladder. Three nests were lined with straw and feathers, but only the one held eggs. Two females were scared from the nests. Several pairs came out last winter, probably in grain cars, as they were first seen feeding on some spilled barley near the tracks. Now there are about 4 pairs here. These are the first ones noted here. (26)

CATALOGUE OF EGGS COLLECTION OF F. H. FOLLER (cont'd) Number Cat. Set A.O.U. 347. 1-3. 280. Aegialitis wilsonia. 348. 1-3. [illegible] Pipilo 349. 3-4. 366. Asio wilsonianus. 350. 6-3. 373. Megascops a. maxwelliae. Date Collector Locality Incub. June 15, 1898. Found on a sand spit on Old Tampa Bay, in a small hollow in the sand just large enough to hold the three eggs. Incubation was far advanced, the embryos having down on. The F was very solicitous, and played the wounded game. A male was secured on the 16th for identification. June 16, 1898. Nest in a low palmetto 20 yds. from Old Tampa Bay, composed of palm fibers. about 1 wk. May 4, 1899. Eggs laid in an old magpie's nest which had about one-third of the side torn out. No lining except the dead leaves which had blown in. The nest 15 ft. high in a willow, built near the main trunk. The bird was discovered by her ears which project above the doorway, and after taking a hurried look at me with her feathers flattened down, she took flight to a nearby tree, and from there to the dense brush. When I visited the nest an hour later, she had returned, and was flushed by a club thrown at the nest. The eggs average small and the bird was very likely a young one. May 4, 1899. Nest in the same hole from which all the eggs of this species in my collection have come. I think a young pair has possession this year, as the eggs are small and only three in number. In the hole where the male stays, I found the feathers of a magpie, and other feathers were scattered around outside the cavity. It therefore seems that this savage little owl includes the magpie in his list of game. Two other sets were taken from this pair. (27)

CATALOGUE OF EGGS COLLECTION OF F. H. FOWLER (cont'd) Number Cat. Set A.O.U. Name 344. 7-8. 475. Pica p. hudsonica. Apr. 14,1898. F.H. Fowler. Ft.Logan,Arap.Co.,Col. Both birds present. Fresh. When this nest was first found on the 9th, early in the morning, it contained 2 eggs, on the 14th 8 eggs; making probably one egg a day for 8 days. The nest is large and bulky, but well built. The entrance is very large - fully 1/4 the circumference of the nest. Nest cup shallow, 12 from base of tree; 50 feet from a much-used road, and in plain sight. While packing the eggs the male kept hopping around the female, shaking his half-open wings, and uttering a squeaky scolding noise in low tones. 345. 5-3. 3736. Megascops a. maxwelliae. Apr. 1898. F.H. Fowler. Ft.Logan,Arap.Co.,Col. Both parents were pulled out of the hole and flew in opposite directions, but neither went to hole No. 2, as they always have before. The three eggs were in different stages of incubation, the whites being from 1/4 liquid to the jelly- like stage. The hole was about 30" deep, and 7" in diam. In the bottom were a few feathers and some chips of rotten wood. 346. 7-4. Passer domesticus. Apr. 28,1898. F.H. Fowler. Ft.Logan,Arap.Co.,Col. On the morning of the 27th, I found 6 sparrows around the long coal bins going to roost behind the iron rollers on the tops of the sliding doors, and soon discovered some tell-tale straws protruding from the openings of some cliff-swallow nests under the eaves of the granary. On the evening of the 28th, I investigated these nests with the aid of ladder. Three nests were lined with straw and feathers, but only the one held eggs. Two females were scared from the nests. Several pairs came out last winter, probably in grain care, as they were first seen feeding on some spilled barley near the tracks. Now there are about 4 pairs here. These are the first ones noted here. (26)

Megascops a. maxwellii. Date Collector Locality Ident. Incub. June 15, 1893. Tampa, Fla. Tampa, Fla. Nest in a low palmetto 20 yds. from Old Tampa Bay, composed of palm fibers. about I wk. May 4, 1899. Denver, C O L. Eggs laid in an old Magedie's nest which had about one-third of the side torn out. No lining except the dead leaves which had blown in. The nest 15 ft. high in a willow, built near the main trunk. The bird was discovered by her care which projected above the edge of the entrance. When I began to climb, she stepped into the doorway, and after taking a hurried look at me with her feathers flattened down, she took flight to a nearby tree, and from there to the dense brush. When I visited the nest an hour later, she had returned, and was flushed by a club thrown at the nest. The eggs average small and the bird was very likely a young one. May 4, 1899. Denver, Col. Nest in the same hole from which all the eggs of this species in my collection have come. I think a young pair has possession this year, as the eggs are small and only three in number. In the hole where the male stays, I found the feathers of a magedie, and other feathers were scattered around outside the cavity. It therefore seems that this savage little owl includes the Magedie in his list of game. Two other sets were taken from this pair. (27)
