California Quail
March 27. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo Co.
Of pair bonds is essentially complete
in this covey. However, no antagonistic
behavior was noted; of the single
birds joining the covey, as far as I
could determine, the great majority
were females, which would explain
lack of antagonism in males.
March 28. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo County,
at 0525 heard calls from roosting quail
in artificial roosts. A few birds were seen
on the ground (from bedroom window), and
in a few minutes birds began to fly
steadily down from roosts to the ground.
Almost all were single, made a straight
slanting flight to open ground and then
ran rapidly to the cover of brush
patches. Most of the birds seemed to
be down by 0547, but 3 were seen
to fly back up into the roost. Assembly
Calls continued beyond this time.
On the ground, in apparent response
to the wet windy weather, most of the
birds congregated in groups under and
around individual thick shrubs.
Further movements of birds were usually
in pairs.
0615. One pair observed copulating-
a second male walked up behind the
