California Quail
March 27. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo
County, near Shandon, Calif. 1715 After
circling the slope of Pole-Line Ridge above
Marion Spring, and noting that no quail
were feeding in open area, I disturbed
an indeterminate number in the brush
just uphill from the spring. In most
cases I only glimpsed one or two birds
running through the brush, and
never flushed a larger group. One
male violently chased another bird
(which appeared to be a female - ?)
in flight, and down into a gully,
giving loud "Psew-psew!" calls.
Two such flights occurred, and
the calls continued for a minute
after they flew out of sight.
Apparently the covey bond has
pretty well disintegrated in these
birds. At 1740, returning to the
ranch house, I saw a group of
36 or more fly into shrubs around
the house. At 1800, after grain
was scattered for quail in back of house,
large numbers of quail gathered, starting
with about 50 already in the area
and building up to about 150.
Almost all birds joined the group
in pairs, indicating heat formation
