California Quail
June 19. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co.
1330 Red ♂ walked from E-9 to E-3.
1340 A number of young chicks were
noted moving back and forth along
the outside of the fence opposite
the nest in A-3. Vegetation was too
thick to see them clearly outside;
a male was perched on the top
of the pen just above. 1341. A loud
emphatic Squill call was heard
apparently from Green ♂, now in A-4,
perhaps in response to ♂ outside.
A ♂ noted in C-1, standing very erect,
and pulsing the throat rapidly (3-4
per second) with bill parted; no
sound could be heard. As he ran
off, his leg band appeared to be Red.
1356 Noted a pair in A-5 moving
downhill along the fence. Checked nest
in A-3 & found hen still sitting, so
this was another pair. 1415 Red ♂
patrolling NW fence. Another ♂ seen
10 minutes ago in E-3. 1421 Saw
a ♂ and ♀ and some small chicks
in A-5, and heard muted assembly
calls and various clucks. This group
moved SE along the fence slowly, the
♂ being seen from time to time,
and reaching A-9 at 1433.
