Sand Island, Johnston Atoll
(Notes)
Mar 29 (cont)
The area it was observed was between the
south side of the west taxiway + tennis
court among the shrubby trees + casuarinas.
The tree into which the bird flew was
searched thoroughly — but it could
not be found. Every area where I thought
the bird might be on the island was
searched for a period of 3 hours, but it
was never sighted again.
April 9
Sooty Tern — 1450 hours — Watched change
over of a sooty today. As one mate landed
the other backed off the young chick + began
strutting in a semicircle. The one which
landed appeared to feed the chick. The young
then crawled beneath the feeding adult —
the adult kept backing up + then finally
settled on the chick. The former incubating
bird now strutted back + forth in front of
the other adult + then took off.
April 12
Sand Is. — Sooty Tern — Today was the
first day nest collared birds did not appear
in plot #3. It seems that the adults will
leave the young for awhile + then return.
Also observed an adult pick up food that
a chick had regurgitated + swallow it.
