Sand Island, Johnston Atoll
(Notes)
Mar. 23 (ext) 1300 hours. Many had their eyes closed,
leaning sideways, bill tips nearly or
Touching ground — appeared asleep or
in a daze. Every few minutes they will
blink their eyelids. One sooty was
observed to keep pulling at his range
steamer.
Later in plot #2 a third bird took
over an egg, was chased off by one of
the — two we landed & had colored,
but at 6 PM this unmarked bird was
again on the egg.
Red-footed Booby — On nest #6 saw
one unlanded bird — displaying along
side the incubating bird. Both were
on the nest as the nest is placed on
metal piling projecting from the water.
Two birds found incubating on the
nest were landed, streamlined, & marked
with red paint; — this bird was not
chased away by the incubating bird
March 29
Johnston Island — Passerine — a small
bird was seen this afternoon as it flew
from one tree to another. It was only
observed the one time & no color could be
seen. However by its size, shape, & flight
characteristics in the short flight; I —
believe it was a Japanese White-Eye. It was
a small bodied bird with a very short tail.
