Bratley, D.A. 1965 Sand Island, Johnston Atoll (Notes) Mar. 23 (ext) 1300 hours. Many had their eyes closed, leaning sideways, bill tips nearly or Touching ground — appeared asleep or in a daze. Every few minutes they will blink their eyelids. One sooty was observed to keep pulling at his range steamer. Later in plot #2 a third bird took over an egg, was chased off by one of the — two we landed & had colored, but at 6 PM this unmarked bird was again on the egg. Red-footed Booby — On nest #6 saw one unlanded bird — displaying along side the incubating bird. Both were on the nest as the nest is placed on metal piling projecting from the water. Two birds found incubating on the nest were landed, streamlined, & marked with red paint; — this bird was not chased away by the incubating bird March 29 Johnston Island — Passerine — a small bird was seen this afternoon as it flew from one tree to another. It was only observed the one time & no color could be seen. However by its size, shape, & flight characteristics in the short flight; I — believe it was a Japanese White-Eye. It was a small bodied bird with a very short tail.
