Sand Island, Johnston Is. Atoll
(Notes)
Mon. June 15 (cont.)
p.3
Note: 535-13513 through 13516 was landed
on east side of south taxiway. The
nest on the west side of the
runway.
Total: 20 nests, 3 with young
Sand Is. - Red-Tailed Tropicbird - one landed
535-13521, was adult subadult (A-U). This
bird was incubating an egg under a
Massarachnidia argentinia just out side our
window of the quarters. Marked with a red
cross (+) on the breast.
Bulwer's Petrel - A certain less than
90 days, 642-01101, found under rock on
east shore of northeast peninsula. Also
landed me 642-01129 on north side of
canvey just west of the air signal
building. It was sitting in the same hole
as with a previous landed bird 642-01120.
This pair was making cooing sounds +
our disturbing them didn't seem to place
them in the least.
Tue. June 16
Sand Is. - Ruddy Turnstone - all show
some degree of change in plumage, with
some nearly in full breeding plumage
+ some hardly changed from the non-
breeding plumage.
Golden Plover - Only two birds showed
that showed any change in plumage + this
amounted to just small black blotches
